The Hague Convention is a multilateral treaty between states in relation to the issue of international child abduction. The treaty provides a lawful procedure for seeking the return of abducted children to their home country. It also helps parents to obtain contact or access to children overseas.
Australia is part of the treaty. The Australian Central Authority in the Attorney-General's Department is responsible for administering the Convention.
If a child is removed from Australia, an application can be brought under The Hague Convention for the return of the child to Australia. Generally, the treaty can apply when a child who born in Australia is removed from Australia by one of their parents to another country which is also a party to The Hague Convention, or when a child born in a Hague Convention country is removed from that country and brought to Australia by a parent.
